Fat Transfer & Fat Augmentation Surgery in Orange County
The first signs of aging noted by patients varies but typically includes the emergence of sagging and loose skin, the downward decent of facial features such as the cheeks and eyebrows, and the loss of fullness around the eyes and cheeks. Although surgical techniques are still used to resolve these problems, the concept of volume enhancement by fat augmentation has revolutionizing facial aesthetic surgery.
To understand this concept, think of the face as a three dimensional structure that loses volume with aging. The loss of volume in the face is similar to a balloon that loses air or volume. As air is removed, the balloon becomes lax, then wrinkles, and eventually sags or falls. Similarily, in the face there is a loss of volume, which occurs mainly in structures and components just underneath the skin, in the subcutaneous layer. Volume is important because it provides support and structure for the skin, thereby keeping the skin tight around the cheeks, eyes, and mouth. As the loss of volume progresses, the skin becomes less taut and we witness the development of wrinkles, creases, and furrows. Therefore, to correct the volume loss by simply removing or pulling excess and sagging skin is not enough, and can sometimes actually lead to a stretched or pulled appearance.
Newer techniques in use at Facial Aesthetic Concepts seek to restore youthful contours by replacing what the aging process has taken away. The process of facial volume loss affects some people by creating hollowness around the eyes, causing the eyes to look deeper set within the eye sockets. Other signs include the creation of a groove or so-called tear trough underneath the lower eyelid. We have found that using one’s own fat to restore lost volume is an excellent method to bring back softer and more youthful contours. Our methods are based on a micro-droplet techniques that achieves smooth, long lasting contours, with minimal downtime. Fat augmentation procedures can last longer than any other injectable filler available today. At Facial Aesthetic Concepts, Drs. Gangnes and Miller are seeing a significant percentage of transferred fat cells surviving for years as they continue to produce soft, youthful, contours. Fat augmentation can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures.
Fat augmentation can be performed under local anesthesia with or without mild sedation. The well tolerated procedure is typically completed in an hour or two. Common treated areas include the cheeks, lips, and areas around the eyes. The eyes are especially noted for significant enhancement after fat augmentation. The reason for this is the considerable importance of volume to this area. If you’ve been thinking about eyelid surgery or simply want to soften the appearance of your eyes, fat transfer may be the non-invasive procedure you’ve been looking for, with very little downtime.

What to expect after autologous fat injections:
Facial enhancing procedures utilizing autologous fat (one’s own fat) require approximately 5 to 7 days of recovery. Some mild swelling and bruising is expected during the first few days following the procedure. Fat injections and fascia grafts will produce mild swelling and bruising for approximately 1 week. An antibiotic and an antiviral (for injections around the mouth) will be prescribed for both of these procedures. Cold compresses may also be of some benefit to alleviate swelling. The small sutures are taken out three to five days after healing. Patients are usually able to apply make-up the following day.
