BOTOX®

Are you looking for a simple and effective way to stave off and sometimes even eliminate common signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles? Facial Aesthetic Concepts may have the answer for you — BOTOX®.

Nearly everyone has heard of BOTOX®; it is probably the most well-known injection treatment of this kind. BOTOX® is an intramuscular injection — a treatment that is injected directly into the muscles of the face in order to treat specific problems in specific areas, such as on the forehead or between the brows.

The name BOTOX® comes from the active ingredient that does most of the work — the botulinum toxin. This toxin is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Also known as botulinum Type A, this toxin has actually been used in medicine and cosmetic procedures since the 1920s. It began being marketed commercially in 1997, and was approved for cosmetic use by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2002. Within just five years of that approval, BOTOX® became the most common cosmetic procedure. More than 4.6 million procedures have been done in the United States alone.

Let’s talk about how BOTOX® works. When you receive your injection, the active ingredient goes into your facial muscles and relaxes them. Relaxed muscles are muscles that cannot contract; no contraction means no wrinkles or lines. For the most part, BOTOX® is recommended for the treatment of “active wrinkles” — lines and creases that have formed recently or aren’t extremely advanced or deep. But recent evidence and studies have suggested another use for BOTOX® — use as a preventative measure to help keep those lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place.

BOTOX® is most commonly used to treat frown lines, forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet around the eyes and creases in the neck. Results are very good and typically last three to six months on average. Your actual results and how long they last can vary, though, depending on factors including the problem you are trying to treat and your individual skin.

How long for BOTOX® to work?

Generally you will begin to see a difference in three days, but the full benefit may take as long as seven days. After some time, your facial muscles will regain the ability to contract, at which point you can decide if you’d like to have another injection. Repeated injections can offer longer-lasting results; talk to one of our doctors here to learn more about whether that might work for you.
