Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is the medical term for reshaping the nose. The “nose job” has undergone a significant change in recent years due to complications seen with earlier techniques. No longer is the emphasis on simply removing bone and cartilage, it now focuses on reshaping and repositioning these structures to provide a better appearing and functioning nose.
The procedure is always tailored to the individual. With the help of computer simulations changes to the tip and profile can be illustrated. Computer simulations during the consultation process also serves to show what is and not possible with the rhinoplasty procedure.
Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, and typically under general anesthesia. Most often the incisions are made entirely within the nose. In contrast to what most people think, not all rhinoplasties require cutting (breaking) of the bones. If required, however, a nasal splint is placed over the nose and is typically removed in one week. Bruising after the procedure can occur but is not universal. Most patients tolerate the procedure well with minimal discomfort and need for pain medication. Upon removal of the splint the nose is slightly swollen but better appearing then before the procedure. Over the course of several months to a year the appearance of the nose will continue to improve as the last bit of swelling resolves. The rhinoplasties of today are designed to maintain the appearance and function for long term. Read more about nose surgery.

Tiplasty
Sometimes a person will only desire improvement in the tip or lower third of their nose. The tip may be twisted, asymmetric, droopy, or have a bump or dip that needs refinement. In these cases, a Tip-plasty can be performed. With a Tip-plasty, no cutting (breaking) of the nasal bones is required, so there is no chance for bruising and the recover is less involved. Depending on the problem, most nasal tips can be improved with incisions on the inside of the nose, although some may require an incision on the outside, but these heal with virtually no sign of a scar.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, with little downtime after the procedure. Depending on the deformity and the thickness of skin swelling resolves quickly, but the tip continues to improve and become better defined months after the procedure. Often improving the look of the nasal tip will actually improve the function of the nose allowing improved nasal breathing. Read more about nose surgery.

Septoplasty
A septoplasty is the medical term commonly applied to straightening the septum. The septum is mostly a cartilage structure that divides the left and right nostrils. If deviated, the septum can cause nasal obstruction and problems breathing through the nose. The deviation physically obstructs the flow of air through the nostril. The deviation can be caused by trauma or occur during early development.
The correction is typically performed with incisions entirely within the nose. Unless markedly deviated, the correction will not change the outer appearance of the nose. However, commonly patients will request changes in the outer appearance of the nose at the same time the septum is being straightened. This is an excellent chance to improve the function and the appearance of the nose. After a septoplasty, no nasal splint is required, and nasal packing is rarely required. Typically, no bruising is involved, and minimal if any swelling is seen on the outside of the nose. Most patients return to physical activities quickly with markedly improved nasal breathing.
