What Causes Eye Bags and Hollow Eyes?

If your eyes appear "hollow" or if they have a swollen, puffy "eye bag" look, you are not alone. These are two common facial developments that affect millions of people over the years, leaving them looking tired, even when they are rested.

The bags under your eyes are the result of weakening tissue supporting your eyelids and around your eyes. Eye bags occur when the fat that supports the eyes moves into the lower eyelids, causing the puffiness you see. Hollow eyes have several causes, including dehydration, smoking, and sleep issues, but one of the most common is aging. As you age the collagen around your eyes starts to diminish, which causes the eyes to appear sunken or hollow.

Prevention tips
Much of the time, hollow eyes and eye bags are the result of genetics and/or aging, both of which will provide inevitable results. To help slow their eventual appearance, here are just a few things you can do:

Don't smoke - Collagen and skin elasticity are reduced over time by smoking. These reductions result in sagging skin on the face, which promotes the appearance of hollow eyes and eye bags.

Get plenty of sleep - A lack of sleep causes blood vessels to dilate, creating dark circles that make the eye area appear hollow. Sleep is one of nature's best healers and one of the best ways to reduce circles and bags around your eyes.

Avoid allergy triggers - Allergies can cause severe reactions around the eyes. Know your allergy triggers and avoid them as much as possible.

Treatments for Hollow Eyes and Eye Bags
Contrary to popular belief, hollow eyes cannot be corrected through cosmetics, creams, or home remedies such as tea bags, all of which either just mask the problem or provide only temporary relief.

Two options that provide longer, more satisfying results for hollow eyes and eye bags are:

Fillers - Soft and pliable, synthetic fillers do what they describe by "filling" in your hollow eyes to boost volume and provide the proper balance of stiffness and softness to achieve a natural, revitalized look around your eyes. Two proven fillers for hollow eyes are Restalyne and Juvederm.

Fat grafting - Also known as "fat transfer," this is a process that removes your own body fat from an area such as the thighs or buttocks and is then injected into the hollow areas under your eyes. It is the same principle as fillers but uses your fat to restore volume and help achieve the same natural-looking result.

Acne Prevention and Treatments

If you or a loved one has acne, there may be some comfort in knowing that acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S. Acne affects up to 50 million Americans and while it can occur in anyone, it is most prevalent in teens and young adults.

Approximately 85 percent of people between the ages of 12 and 24 experience at least minor acne.

Acne is a multifactorial disease, with potential causes including genetics, hormone fluctuation, excess oil production, and bacteria. Other causes may include cosmetic, foods, medications, stress, weather changes, skin sensitivity issues, and allergies. It is therefore obvious that no two acne sufferers are exactly alike, and there is certainly no single cure for this condition. Acne, however, can be kept in check extremely well. At Facial Aesthetic Concepts, we strive to provide each acne patient with a truly customized treatment plan.

Here are some tips for preventing acne breakouts and minimizing the appearance of acne:

Keep your face clean - Washing your face at least twice a day will help remove impurities, dead skin, and excess facial oils. Use warm water and rub gently with a mild facial cleanser. Using a cleansing brush such as a Clarisonic is recommended to flush away impurities, ensuring a thorough cleanse, exfoliation, removal of excess oils, and impurities in your pores. Washing with a device will allow for a deeper cleanse than you would with your hands.

Moisturize - Contrary to popular belief, moisturizing can help reduce the appearance of acne by minimizing dryness and flaking, but be sure to use an oil free moisturizer. The acne skin products to use will indicate they are "noncomedogenic," which means they will not cause or inflame acne.

Use only light make-up - Foundations and powders, for example, can inflame acne. Use as little make-up as possible, remove it at the end of the day, and look for make-up products that are noncomedogenic.

Avoid touching your face - This can irritate inflamed facial skin by introducing bacteria that is on your hands. Even propping your cheek or chin in your hands should be avoided.

Avoid sunlight - The ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun can increase inflammation and redness. And be aware of particular acne medications which may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Here are just a few of the many effective treatments for acne and acne scars:

Microdermabrasion - Polishes away dead cells using amonium oxide crystals. Microdermabrasion is customizable to your needs and tolerance and is most effective when it includes a cleanse, extractions (if needed), hydrating mask, and medical grade finishing products.

Chemical peels - Peels to treat acne can range from light to deep and can help refresh the appearance of acne skin. A consultation with an experienced esthetician can help determine the peel that is best for you or a loved one.

BLU-U Acne Therapy - A simple treatment that emits special blue light that reacts with the bacteria that causes acne, stimulating the production of “porphyrins” within the clogged pore. Porphyrins act to kill the bacteria present within the pores, thereby reducing inflammation and helping to prevent future breakouts.

Microneedling - A state-of-the-art process that offers great results, without pain, downtime, expense, or thermal damage. Microneedling helps to stimulate your skin’s natural ability to produce new collagen and develop healthier skin while allowing specific topical solutions to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin for optimal rejuvenating results.

It is best to consult on what treatments are best for you, based on your desired goals. Our estheticians can also work with you to create a skin care regimen that is best suited for your skin type.

To prevent acne scarring, avoid "popping" pimples, picking at facial scabs, and make sure to treat the acne eruptions as soon as they occur.

The Consultation

The consultation is the most important time when considering plastic surgery. It is an individualized process that allows the you not only to relay aesthetic concerns, but to establish comfort with your surgeon. Consider the consultation as a journey taken together with your doctor.  It is a learning process for you both. The doctor is learning about your goals and concerns and you learn about the underlying causes of aesthetic concerns and the various options we offer to correct them.

What to Bring?
Come prepared with questions, this is the perfect time to get answers and resolve any concerns you may be having. Also, be prepared to provide thorough information in regards to your medical history. For facial consultations we ask that you bring in personal photos from younger years to help identify changes that have occurred in the aging process and more importantly, the photos help to define our goals from a surgical procedure.

In the Consultation Room
When in the consult room you are asked to show the doctor the areas you would like to treat. This process allows you both to have an open discussion about your greatest concerns and allows the doctor the opportunity to explain what is causing the things that “bother” you.

After we have discussed the concerns and underlying causes of those concerns, we have a detailed discussion about the treatment options that will create the greatest improvement.  We will also have a candid discussion about desires, recover time, and budget.  The more discussion that occurs during the consultation the more comfortable our patients become, and, the better our doctors are able to provide a service that exceeds expectations.

If you have ever thought about getting a procedure, take the first step and come in for a consultation to become informed and comfortable with the options available.

The best outcomes are in patients that are well informed with realistic expectations. At FAC our team makes every effort to inform and support our patients throughout the surgical process. There is a reason we have been voted the Best Cosmetic Surgery Center in Orange County for 11 years!

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny, sterile needles in order to induce the production of cutaneous collagen and elastin. Collagen induction can improve the texture of skin, including improvements in pore size, fine lines, and acne scarring. Thousands of microscopic channels are created in the skin to increase the formation of new tissue by activating the body’s wound healing process.

Microneedling improves:

  • Pore size
  • Crepey skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Collagen production
  • Photodamage
  • Light scarring
  • Skin elasticityMost patients see improvement after just one treatment, but additional benefits will be seen after multiple sessions.

Goodbye Sun Spots
It is the perfect time to take advantage of our great promotion to treat your sun spots now with either of these treatments, while the days are still cloudy and cool!

IPL/PHOTOFACIAL

Without damaging the skin, the light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the abnormally dilated vessels or pigmentation. The heat impairs the vessel or lesion, or breaks down pigmentation, and the body begins its natural healing process while tightening, removing brown discoloration, spider veins, redness and improving skin texture

What is the difference between tone and texture? Skin tone is the evenness of the skin color - sun spots, blotches, redness, etc.; while skin texture is the condition of the surface of the skin - smoothness, pore size, fine lines, etc. IPL works best to improve skin tone, additional treatment such as microneedling can be applied to even greater improve skin texture. IPL requires no downtime and you can return to work the same day!

Most patients see a significant improvement after just one treatment but see additional benefits in multiple sessions.  Follow up treatments may be required to maintain results.

FRACTIONAL CO2

Fractional CO2 is a popular laser treatment for the skin that has been shown to dramatically diminish wrinkles and improve sun damage with minimal downtime. The fractional CO2 laser energy heats and vaporizes layers of the skin to remove brown spots and sun damage while it heats the dermis tostimulate new collagen and elastin to reduce lines and wrinkles. This very popular treatment at FAC can be performed in conjunction with the TCA acid peel or photo facial for accentuated results.

Before the Fractional C02 treatment, a numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area to minimize discomfort. Oral sedation is also available at the patient’s request. The skin will feel very warm during the treatment with a mild sunburn sensation lasting for about 2 - 4 hours directly after treatment. Over the next few days there will be some inflammation, the skin will bronze and start to flake within 3 days. Post treatment products are given to ensure comfort and rapid healing. Most patients heal fully within 7-10 days.

Along with your treatment, we provide a complimentary facial with our medical esthetician to ensure proper post treatment rejuvenated skin.

NANOFRACTIONAL

An award winning, breakthrough treatment offering great results with no-surgery, little to no downtime, and no pain.

In the last decade, there has been progressive innovation in non-surgical treatments to improve skin tone, quality, texture and rejuvenate the skin’s appearance.  There is always a balancing act between effectiveness, downtime, and patient discomfort.

Generally, the more downtime, the more effective the treatment but also, the more downtime, the more discomfort.  NanoFractional technology bridges a gap between these three aspects of aesthetic treatments offering little to no downtime, no pain, and a great result.

Our General Manager, Chris, recently had a treatment and was thrilled with the experience. “Being in aesthetics for the last 15 years I have seen and had many different treatments.  I was amazed that the NanoFractional RF was completely comfortable and produced a great response in my skin.  My skin was a little red after the treatment, but I resumed normal activities immediately and my skin felt tighter and smoother the next morning.  I’ve not seen this combination of no downtime, no discomfort, and an immediate tightening of the skin in any other treatment.”

NanoFractional RF uses tiny needles, less than 1mm, to deliver multi polar radio frequency energy and Pulsed Electro Magnetic Fields to produce uniform heating in the skin’s surface.  This heating stimulates the skin to produce collagen and elastin fibers, resulting in smoother, firmer skin that looks noticeably more youthful.

The treatment is really a combination of microneedling and radio frequency skin rejuvenation.  Combining technologies has proven to create a more effective treatment and as such we have added not only NanoFractional RF to our portfolio but also are combining this with IPL treatment to address not only skin texture and tightness but also reduce pigmentation and redness in the skin.  We call this our Tone and Texture NanoFractional or TNT NanoFractional.

“Our ability to improve skin quality, tone, and texture is continually improving with innovative new treatments.  NanoFractional RF technology represents an outstanding improvement in what we are able to accomplish without discomfort and little to no downtime.” FAC Founder, Dr. Richard Gangnes

3 Ways to Restore Your Youthful Appearance

3 Treatments to Shed Years Off Your Skin

NanoFractional-RF (NFRF)

NanoFractional is a non-surgical procedure designed to smooth and tighten the skin with no downtime.  The procedure delivers radiofrequency energy using microneedles to heat and stimulate the skin.  The procedure is very comfortable and  targets superficial fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating the skin to rebuild collagen and elastin.  NanoFractional is very effective at improving skin texture and firmness.

Dynamic Variable Depth RF (DVDRF)

DVDRF is similar to NanoFractional, as it uses microneedling with to deliver radiofrequency energy to the skin. Where the two technologies are different are in the depth of the skin that is targeted and the energy that can be delivered.  DVDRF uses variable treatment depth and energy to customize treatment parameters to each individual patient.  Because we are able to treat the skin at greater depths we can also treat body areas with DVDRF.

SIMILARITIES

        Both NanoFractional and DVDRF...
        - Involve microneedling to deliver RF
        - Stimulate collagen and elastin production
        - Improve skin texture – pore size, fine lines, acne scaring
        - PRP can be topically applied with either procedure

        DIFFERENCES
       - NFRF is a set depth of 0.5mm, while DVD ranges in depths between 0.5mm-3.0mm.
         - NFRF requires no downtime.
        - NFRF is performed in a series, DVDRF is typically a single treatment
        - DVDRF can be used on the body

Fillers
Restylane and Defyne

Restylane is a hyaloronic acid formulated gel similar to that of your bodies natural hyaluronic acid production to add volume and fullness to your skin in order to correct moderate to severe wrinkles, specifically targeting the nasolabial folds and marionette lines typically referred to as smile or parenthesis lines that form around your mouth.

Defyne targets deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines in order to restore a more youthful you, while maintaining a natural look. As you age you skin gets lose begins to lose its hold slowly causing these lines around your mouth to become more prominent.

Look great in time for your holiday events with the following treatments! Whether you need to lose the wrinkles and pigmentation or add some volume, stimulate collagen, and improve skin completion. Learn more about some of the treatments we offer to help you and our holiday promotions to get you ready for all our events:

Smooth
Fine and wrinkles appear without notice and can make us appear older than we feel. The aging of our skin can be in the form of wrinkles, pigmentation, and sagging skin. This caused by the natural aging process, though the environment can play a role in speeding up our aging process. If you need to stimulate some collagen and elastin in your skin some the treatments below are a great start to get your ready for the holidays. We have provided an expected amount of time you will need to let your skin heal for each of the procedures listed to ensure you schedule your treatment with enough time to spare for your holiday event!

Microneedling

During the treatment tiny micro-channels are created in the skin to stimulate new cell and collagen production, smoothing out contour irregularities and reducing discoloration left from previous breakouts. The skin heals very quickly, closing the micro-channels within the first day. A small amount of sloughing may occur post treatment for up to a week, but with moisturizer it is barely visible. Treatments are done in a series 4-6 weeks apart with appropriate homecare in between. They can be done alone or even combined with other treatments to enhance the results. Microneedling treatment is virtually painless with little to no downtime. Contact us for a complimentary consultation to see if Microneedling is the right treatment for you!

Benefits:  Microneedling is a no downtime procedure that can dramatically improve the appearance of the skin and quality of both skin tone and texture.  It allows for potent topical products to be delivered deeper into the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin creation.

*You may experience redness for a few days to follow, but make-up can be applied after 24 hours if needed.

NanoFractional

NanoFractional RF technology represents an outstanding improvement in what we are able to accomplish without discomfort and little to no downtime.” Founder Dr. Richard Gangnes

Benefits: This procedure combines the benefits of microneedling with radio frequency heating of the skin. The treatment if very comfortable and offers exceptional results with little to no downtime.  Skin feels and appears tighter after the first treatment with results continuing to improve over several months.  The treatment is safe for all skin types.

  • 1-3 days post treatment
  • Mild sunburn sensation with redness
  • Avoid exercising and make-up for 24 hours
  • 1-2 weeks avoid prolonged sun exposure

Fractional CO2

The Fractional CO2 is typically a one time treatment to diminish wrinkles and improve sun damage with minimal downtime. A laser with fractional technology, meaning its treats portions of the skin while keeping portions of the skin intact. It targets fine lines/wrinkles, sun damage, and melasma. The fractional CO2 laser energy heats up the tissue at the level of the dermis to stimulate new collagen and elastin and break up pigmentation.

Benefits: It is an exceptional treatment to improve the texture and quality of the skin.  It is an excellent treatment option for brown spots, melasma, and finer lines and wrinkles. It does not have a substantial impact on redness, facial tightening, or deeper lines and wrinkles. Most people will see results and meet their expectations with one treatment, but those with more problematic skin features may require additional treatments. It is a very popular procedure at FAC and can be performed in conjunction with the TCA acid peel for accentuated results.

*Expect up to 14 days to let your skin heal

  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure
  • Skin will be flaking
  • Mild to moderate swelling
  • Redness and bronzing will fade into a light pinkness to the skin
  • Itching and dryness is common and can be alleviated with a cool compress

Contour
Youthful contours are created by restoring the skins underlying structure, that has been diminished by the aging process. We use a variety of non-surgical treatments to rebuild the underlying structure returning natural facial contours. One of the most popular treatments to bring your youthful contours back are Botox and Fillers.

Botox and Fillers

FAC uses more Botox and filler than anyone in Orange County! The most common treatments that produce a remarkable result with little to no downtime. Whether its frown lines, smile lines or just general wrinkles, Botox and fillers smooth the signs of 'maturity' and keep you looking great. Botox can take anywhere between 7-14 days to notice full results, and while filler can remain a bit swollen immediately after injection and take time to settle.

3 ways CoolSculpting just got better

CoolSculpting is a great treatment for those stubborn fat areas that are hard to lose. Even if you work out and eat right you may still notice stubborn fat. It is FDA Cleared, a non-surgical, and has little to no downtime. Patients may see results after just one session, and continue to see better results after each session as you look to the images on the right as an example. The CoolSculpting treatment was born when it was realized cold can selectively affect and eliminate fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue. CoolSculpting can be treated in various areas, we recommend you come in for a complimentary consultation and have on of our providers assess your concerned areas in order to provide you with the most beneficial treatment plan to achieve your goals. We recommend you be able to pinch an inch of fat in order to receive this treatment, as we often notice some patients concerns tend to be lose skin, in that case we also provide tightening treatments that one of our provides could recommend.

At Facial Aesthetic Concepts we offer you the ability to Dual Sculpt, this is being able to treat two areas at one time. We have 4 systems, 9 different applicators to treat your different areas of concerns. Some of the areas we are able to treat with different applicators are Stomach, Arms, Chin, Flanks, and Thighs. Dual sculpting is another way we reduce your treatment time by being able to treat both sides at once, if Dual Sculpting is applicable to the area you want treated. The image below shows the way the dual sculpting can be applied to your body. You also have the option to earn points through Brilliant Distinctions!

Shorter Treatment Times Just 35 min.

The treatment times are cut down to nearly half the time of our original CoolSculpting treatments from 60 minutes to 35 minutes. The reason for this is due to the cup design of the CoolAdvantage and the colder temperature it reaches. With the CoolAdvantage the temperatures get to the target quicker than before. This is a huge benefit for those who have busy schedules

Greater Patient Comfort

During a study population Patients report 45% improvement in comfort scores during treatment with the CoolAdvantage applicator, along with a reduction in bruising.

Better Results

With the CoolAdvantage more tissue is able to be treated, as the new design provides a larger cooling area. With the previous cup design the center of the area being treated wasn’t as effective in targeting the whole fat that is within the cup, as the CoolAdvantage is able to target. If you look at the images to the right the lines provide a visual to the areas that weren’t being treated previously to the areas that are being targeted with the CoolAdvantage.

Your Eyes CAN Lie!

No other facial feature can misrepresent your “inner cheer” more than your eyes.  The eyes can tell the story of a person without saying a word and can be one of the most attractive qualities about a person.

Unfortunately, sometimes the story being told by your eyes may not be true.

Have you ever been asked, “is something wrong,” or told you look “tired” when neither of those is true?  This can be due to the changes that occur in the structure of the bone and tissue surrounding the eyes.

As we age, changes in bony structures and the fat beneath our skin result in what we perceive as aging and the dreaded “tired” eyes.  The good news is that several easy options are available to restore the contours that give a refreshed looking appearance to the eyes.

There are three different means of improving the eyes skin, fat, and/or anatomy of the upper and lower eyelids.

UPPER EYELIDS

The upper eyelids are a key culprit producing the appearance of sad and tired eyes.  The fat surrounding the eye itself is lost in the aging process, and this volume loss causes sagging of the skin of the eyebrow area and the upper lid itself.

Fat transfer is an innovative non-surgical procedure that uses your own fat, harvested from the thigh or buttocks, injected with a microcannula to precisely target areas of fat and bone loss and restore ideal contours of the upper eyelid.  In certain patients, the heaviness of the upper eyelid skin cannot be corrected with non-surgical means.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a minor procedure in which a small ellipse of skin is removed from the upper eyelid to improve the eye contour and correct the “heaviness” that can be seen in some eyelids.

LOWER EYELIDS Unfortunately, the lower eyelids have a wider variety of causes for the signs of aging.  The bone of the lower portion of the orbital rim, the eye socket, loses volume which can change the position of the fat pad beneath the eye, and the fat pad can even become herniated.  The change in the position of the lower eye lid fat produces what we call “bags” under our eyes. In some cases, the skin beneath the eye is the underlying cause of “bags” and wrinkles beneath the eye.  Because this is found to be so prevalent, we created a very unique procedure, the Lower Lid Pinch, to address just the skin beneath the eyes.  It involves using a medication to free the skin from the underlying fat and muscle, allowing us to “pinch” the skin that will be removed and remove a very small ellipse of skin, resulting in a smooth lower eyelid contour. When the goal is to correct the contours of the lower eyelid, we will usually recommend the Trans Lower Lid Blepharoplasty.  This unique procedure uses no visible incision to access and reposition the fat pad of the lower eyelid.  The resulting change in fat position creates a smooth, natural appearance of the eyes.
Take the first step to learn more. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Boeckmann or Dr. Gangnes.  We will ask you to bring in photos of yourself from your 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s so that we can focus on the goal of restoring your youthful appearance.
