Breakthrough Products, Alastin Skincare

Alastin Skincare product line helps prepare and increase skin receptiveness to procedures as well as boosting the healing process to improve the overall procedure result. The products are also designed to combat the signs of aging, in addition to enhance and maintain skin health with daily use. Alastin products, with proprietary TriHex Technology, feature a patent-pending synergistic blend of potent peptides and key ingredients in a formulation designed to penetrate the skin. Alastin products featuring TriHex Technology are based on proprietary science designed to stimulate, strengthen and support the skin’s regenerative processes which produces new skin that is softer, smoother and more pliable.

In histological studies, Alastin Skincare products have been shown to increase the accumulation of both elastin and collagen which has made Alastin the leader among skincare lines in elastin stimulation.

Importance of Elastin and Collagen

Elastin and collagen are the primary structural component proteins in the dermis. Collagen and elastin are abundant in early skin and critical for its ability to renew and regenerate. As the skin ages, it becomes less and less able to naturally recycle itself and regenerate, which means slower wound healing and evident signs of aging.

Peptides and Skin Regeneration

Peptides are small proteins naturally present in the body that direct cell signaling. Certain peptides signal the generation of collagen and elastin. Also, some have modulating and recycling properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM), enhancing the skin’s own ability to generate renewed, healthy skin.

Skin Repair

Although many patients believe the healing process is complete within a few short weeks post-procedure, that visible healing is only on the skin’s surface. In truth, the full healing process can last well beyond the visual signs of recovery. Invasive and non-invasive procedures require specific aftercare and the healing process can last as long as 1-3 months post-treatment.

When skin is cut or injured in a surgical, ablative, laser or peel procedure, the body begins a natural process of healing, including:

  • The Inflammation Phase:stabilizes the site and cleans away dead cells and any bacteria; lasts a short period of time and if prolonged, can lead to scar formation
  • The Reparative Phase:skin cells multiply and initiate mobilization to close the wound and regenerate the epidermis (outer skin layer)
  • The Remodeling Phase:completes the skin remodeling; can take 30-90 days or more and is marked by the formation of new layers of skin built up from within; moderation of inflammation can reduce scarring and discoloration.

Similar to how the chronic wound healing process benefits from wound bed preparation, treatment of aging of the skin may be improved with a “skin bed preparation” to optimize rejuvenation procedures and skin maintenance programs.

Defyne Your Expression

Correction of “smile lines” are a common request among patients seeking to improve their overall facial appearance. The smile lines typically begin in the mid to late 30’s, secondary to global fat loss in our face. As we lose facial volume, the skin has less support, which results in the descent of the cheek skin toward our lower face. Retaining ligaments in the face attach our skin to the underlying facial skeleton around our mouth which result in nasolabial folds, lateral smile lines, and marionette lines. However, our face is dynamic and cannot be treated as a static structure. Anytime filler is placed, it is important to assess the face at rest and with animation in order to optimize results and prevent overcorrection. The smile lines have traditionally been a difficult area to treat non-surgically due to the potential for overcorrection, harshness with movement or an unnatural appearance. Instead, correction has been focused on filling the upper face to lift the cheek skin, resulting in the softening.

Several new fillers have become approved for use this year which give us expanded ability to correct these difficult to treat areas. Restylane Defyne is a new hyaluronic acid filler available and enables correction of smile lines at both resting state and with animation. Restylane Defyne is unique in its ability to provide deep soft tissue augmentation in the lower cheek, while maintaining natural softness with movement such as smiling and laughing. The filler is distinctive because it is stabilized with XpresHAn Technology which allows for deep soft tissue correction of moderate to severe lines and folds while retaining flexibility for movement.  An average correction will last one year and can be repeated as needed for optimal correction.

It is important to remember that not all smile lines can be corrected with filler. When significant tissue laxity is present, the best results may be achieved with a combination of treatments, such as volume replacement and a lower face lift. For early smile lines, skin resurfacing with collagen stimulating treatments can be corrective. To determine candidacy for smile line correction, a consultation is recommended to identify and guide the appropriate treatment.

The Perfect Pairing :: Treatments With Products That Enhance

We all enjoy a fine glass of wine, especially when paired with the right meal. Just like the right steak can bring out and enhance the flavors of a beautiful glass of red wine, the right product can help to enhance and increase the results from a treatment. Using the right products after receiving a treatment is vital to enhancing and maintaining your results. I like to look at it as protecting your investment. You want to make sure your skin is receiving all the wonderful products and nutrients it can to look its absolute best.

One of the biggest concerns I see, especially being a resident in sunny Southern California, is dark spots or uneven complexion. Photofacials, aka IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), help to reduce pigmentation and red undertones. One great product that really helps to enhance this treatment is Lytera 2.0 by Skin Medica. This is a non- hydroquinone skin brightening complex that is mild enough to use on a daily basis, and unlike other exfoliating products, this can be used the day after you have your treatment done.

Microneedling has become a new favorite here at FAC. Microneedling helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, shrink pore size, and can improve acne scarring. Because microneedling is also know as CIT (collagen induction therapy), its main purpose is to trigger a response within our own bodies to stimulate collagen production. With this treatment, we like to pair it with a powerful growth factor.  TNS Essential Serum is our go- to anti-aging serum. Within this product, the TNS growth factors penetrate through the skin, increasing cellular renewal and production (collagen). It also has an abundance of antioxidants to fight free radical damage and brighten the skin. This is so beneficial and important to incorporate into your routine during microneedling, that we even put that TNS growth factor on your skin in the office  right after you have your treatment done so its able to travel through all those new micro channels the microneedling device created.

Another really great treatment that pairs well with the TNS Essential Serum, is our Fractional CO2. This resurfacing laser is a great treatment for the fall and winter time, as it helps to exfoliate off sun damage will stimulating collagen to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Just like with microneedling, the TNS Essential Serum helps to keep the collagen production going post treatment, helping you maintain and protect your results.

Who doesn’t love a good Botox treatment, especially before the holidays? Botox is great treatment to help inactive certain muscles on the face to reduce facial wrinkling and prevent future lines from forming. Here at FAC, we carry Wri-lax which has been clinically proven to increase the longevity of Botox up to 20%. This product uses a protein called Argireline, which also instantly improves facial expressions and lines. This is also a great alternative for women who are breastfeeding or pregnant and cannot receive their normal Botox treatment.

These are just a few of our favorite combinations of treatments and products. If you have any questions on what treatments and products would pair well with your skin, please schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our providers.

Microneedling :: What it is, What it's not and Why you want it...

Microneedling has become quite the topic of discussion over the past few years, and even more so in the past few months.  There is a lot of misunderstanding, as some are referring to it as the "vampire facial" based on a post by Kim Kardashian. With this said, we thought some clarity would be beneficial as we hope to not only educate our Facial Aesthetic Concepts community, but also highlight why Microneedling is a great non-invasive treatment that gives you the subtle, rejuvenated glowing skin. Reasons why Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts and other celebs are obsessed with this treatment.

What Microneedling is....

Microneedling is a technique that uses a needle studded wand to drive tiny holes into the skin to spur on collagen growth. There is no use of chemicals, topicals or lasers in this treatment. With microneedling, skin produces collagen to repair itself with no scarring, but instead giving you firmer, smoother, more hydrated skin with no flaking! This treatment has proven to reduce the appearance of fine line ,wrinkles, reduction in scars, pore size and stretch marks - improving texture and skin tone.
As lasers only affect the exterior layer of the skins epidermis, this treatment penetrates into the dermis to not only resurface the skin, but also to ignite a layer of collagen and elastin below the skins surface.

What Microneedling is not...

As mentioned earlier, Microneedling has been confused with the "vampire facial." As some are interested in this process that is called the "vampire facial," it is different than microneedling and is not truly proven to have the results it claims. I fully understand how needles can be scary and it is correlated with pain.  When you get the microneedling treatment done, we put on a numbing cream prior to the area to help take any discomfort away.

Why you want Microneedling...

Microneeding tightens, lifts and gives you that anti-aging glow about your skin. It can reduces acne scars, surgical scars and other scarring. "Micro-needling treatment can improve the appearance of shallow, diffuse acne scarring along with improving all-over skin tone and texture," confirms Gary Motykie, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Beverley Hills. "For very deep acne scars, I would recommend combining micro-needling with another treatment such as dermal fillers, laser resurfacing, or scar treatment."
Microneedling also improves wrinkles and fine lines. "I have been using micro-needling for the past five years and have obtained gratifying results for treating fine wrinkles and scars, especially those around the mouth, on the neck and the crepeyness of the cheeks and on the sides of the eyes," says Nelson Lee Novick, Clinical Professior of Dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC. But he warns, "Microneedling should be reserved for static wrinkles, i.e. wrinkles at rest," and not those caused by repeated movements.
Microneedling is a great alternative to laser treatments, especially if you are not ready to take that step as well as a fabulous treatment to do in between your laser treatments to maintain the healthy, subtle smooth skin. With little to no downtime, why wouldn't you take the pludge and get the amazing improved complexion that you are wanting?!  Be sure to call today and make your appointment.

Fall In Love With Exfoliation

After we enjoy the summer sun, we need to restore our skin from the damage it causes and free radical harm. Our skin needs a bit of extra help to recover its glow as we enter the Fall season. The fall and winter months are an exceptional time to kick up your exfoliating therapies due to minimal heat and sun exposure which can cause skin issues such as:  pigmentation, irritation, dryness, and breakdown of the skin or possible sun burn.

Microneedling:  Designed to stimulate your skin's natural ability to produce new collagen by creating "micro-channels" by vertically piercing the skin with tiny needles. This medical grade treatment can restore skin's thickness with collagen production as well as improve fine lines and wrinklesacne scarringpore sizedecrease hyperpigmentation and melasma. The downtime is minimal; patients can experience redness that can last 24 to 48 hours after, and dryness or flakiness (time can vary depending on the depth that is recommended for your skincare concerns). This makes it a great treatment for those that have a busy lifestyle and do not have the capacity for extended amounts of downtime. Usually you will notice improvements in your skin tone and texture after the first treatment, more significant results will start to occur after 2 -3 treatments.

Polish & Glow Treatment: This treatment combines the manual exfoliation benefits of Dermaplaning with the chemical exfoliation benefits of our Express Glow treatment. This combination is a great way to improve the appearance of milddull skin and smooth out dry, rough skin.  It is a great stand-alone treatment to enhance your at-home care or can be done post microneedling (SEE OUR GREAT PROMO) to continue to polish off and soften the texture, plump and hydrate and enhance the results of your microneedling treatment.

An ablative laser with fractional technology, which targets fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, melasma and improves overall texture. Most people can achieve great results after one session. The Fractional C02 laser energy removes surface tissue and heats at the level of the dermis to stimulate new collagen production and break up pigmentation. The down-time can typically last 5 to 7 days (healing time can vary per patient) for the face. This consists of mild redness and bronzing of the skin prior to sloughing. This is ideal for those who want dramatic changes in only one resurfacing treatment and have more availability for downtime.

Oxy-mist facial at FAC

Take Back The Hands Of Time With Our Combination Treatment of Radiesse & a TCA Peel

Have you ever looked down at your hands and thought, "I'm not the age of those hands"? As one gets older, yours hands lose volume, fat and elasticity. The top "meaty" supple layer of the hand starts to disappear; your skin starts to look a little translucent and your veins tend to be more apparent. You may even notice more sun spots in your skin. This is a natural part of life and aging, but it also doesn't have to be a part of your story or something that you tend to hide or are self-conscious about.

This month we are offering a combination treatment that not only improves sun damaged skin and sun spots, but it also improves the texture and elasticity of the skin with that youthful boost that smooths aged hands. This combination treatment is with Radiesse followed by a TCA Peel.  Now let's breakdown what both these treatments are and how they bring back your youthful appearing hands.

Radiesse is the first and only filler deemed FDA approved to correct lost volume in the hands. The unique Radiesse formula provides lift in the areas below deep wrinkles and folds, diminishing the appearance for a more refreshed look.  Over time, the benefits of Radiesse continue by stimulating your body's own natural collagen.

Here are some key factors about Radiesse:
  • Helps restore a more youthful appearance to hands
  • Quick, in-office treatment
  • Reduces the appearance of tendons and veins
  • Deliver smooth, natural-looking results that last up to a year in most patients.

As we covered what Radiesse can do for you, let's talk about the other element of this combination treatment: TCA Peel.  A TCA Peel will treat more stubborn brown spots, more difficult skin texture issues as well as those deeper lines and wrinkles.

Be sure to take advantage of this combination treatment this month and raise those youthful hands!

Liquid Lift FAC

Achieve a Liquid Lift with BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers

Liquid Lift or Liquid Facelift is a procedure that uses injections of dermal fillers or muscle immobilizers (Botox) to erase fine lines as well as firm and tighten sagging skin. This procedure adds volume to your face, as well. It is used to treat mild conditions like crow's feet, marionette lines, small jowls and vertical lip lines.

What Does a Liquid Lift Involve?

After consulting with the doctor to discuss the options, the patient is given a local anesthetic in the target area. The doctor will then start injecting the filler and/or Botox in the specific area(s) discussed.

Most Liquid Lifts are temporary and last anywhere from a few months to 2 years. The procedure usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. There may be some bruising at the injection for the next day or so.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injections that fill a line or crease with a specific substance and make the line apparently disappear. They can also add volume to the face by filling out thin lips and making facial skin tighter.

Most dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the human body. Some studies indicate that repeated injections of hyaluronic acid may stimulate the body’s production of collagen. Depending on the type of filler used, the effects of a hyaluronic acid can last from several months to 2 years.

A few dermal fillers are made with synthetic substances, which last longer than the hyaluronic acid fillers. They are also more likely to cause side effects including redness and bruising.

What is BOTOX®?

A BOTOX® injection works by paralyzing certain muscles and blocking certain nerves. Botox smooths facial wrinkles, in which the effects can last 3 to 12 months. You are able to return to work as well as other activities after treatment. BOTOX® should not be used by women who are pregnant or breast feeding.

By working together, we can develop the best treatment plan  for your Liquid Lift in order to meet your cosmetic needs. Contact us today to schedule your consultation.

Facelift vs Extended Microlift for Facial Rejuvenation

There has been a gradual shift over the past two decades in the way that people look at health, youth, and beauty. Fewer people are content with growing old gracefully, as it were. People are willing to take steps to improve their appearance and maintain their youthful vigor for as long as they possibly can. As a result, more people see procedures like facelifts and extended microlifts as a normal part of their healthcare as they age.

What is an Extended Microlift?

An extended microlift is a procedure that allows patients who have moderate sagging in their neck and jawline to contour their face, giving them a more youthful appearance. An extended microlift does not address all of the problems that a complete facelift would. It is designed for patients who need minimal treatment around their jaw and neck in order to regain their youthful appearance.

The results achieved by an extended microlift are similar to those achieved with a facelift. The difference is that with an extended microlift, the patient needs less work to meet their aesthetic goals. The incisions used during the procedure as well as the recovery time are shorter than with a traditional facelift.

During the extended microlift procedure, subtle incisions are made that allow the surgeon to gain access to the layer of muscle underneath the skin for repositioning.

Prior to this procedure, a patient will receive general or sedation anesthesia. Once the procedure has been completed, a patient will have minimal discomfort as well as bruising and swelling that will clear up in 7 to 10 days. On average, sutures are removed one week following the procedure. And within two weeks, most patients feel comfortable enough to get back to a normal routine.

A Traditional Facelift

During the procedure, a surgeon will make incisions around the temple. From there, the surgeon will begin to reshape the muscles. Once the procedure has been completed, the skin is closed using sutures. Recovery time may vary.

A facelift procedure can be accompanied by eyelid surgery, a brow lift, or other cosmetic surgeries. Speak with a surgeon regarding other procedures that may be beneficial alongside a facelift.

Schedule a Consultation

Both an extended microlift and a traditional facelift can address problems that accompany aging. It is best to consult a surgeon when determining which procedure is right for you. Contact Facial Aesthetic Concepts today to schedule your consultation.

ThermiVa FAC

Experiencing Vaginal Dryness? Consider ThermiVa!

You knew that changes would happen to your body eventually. You knew that as we get older, we see a few wrinkles and fine lines. Your body has changed as well, adding a few more curves where they didn’t used to be. You can accept that this is a part of life, but you never expected vaginal problems such as dryness and irritation. Maybe you have tried different creams and asked your doctor for answers. Maybe you've been told that it’s hormonal, but you have not found relief. ThermiVa could be the answer you have been looking for all along.

What’s Going On Down Below?

As you approach menopause, your body is in for some serious changes. Your reproductive system is getting ready to shut down which means your reproductive hormones, estrogen and progesterone are going to drop. These hormones are responsible for more than your sexual health, they have an impact on you in many ways. When your hormones drop, they can lead to a thinning of the vaginal tissues. As this thinning occurs in this delicate area, dryness is typical. This dryness can cause irritation that even your urethra is affected, causing female incontinence.

It can be so frustrating. Add the changes that occurred in the birth canal after having children and you could be in for some serious discomfort. Medication and lotions aren’t enough. You need something that will promote the development of healthy tissue in your vagina. That’s where ThermiVa comes into play.

Understanding ThermiVa

ThermiVa is a non-invasive treatment that is designed to tighten your vaginal tissues and produce healthy cells as collagen production is increased. This type of therapy is designed to rejuvenate this sensitive area so that you will have increased lubrication once again.

A slim, narrow wand uses radiofrequency energy that is applied to your vaginal tissues. The energy level is carefully controlled, causing a heating effect that will stimulate cell growth, circulation and collagen production. The only thing you will feel is a gentle warmth. As the tissues of your vagina are rejuvenated, you should find relief.

Learn More About ThermiVa

If you are like so many women, you are too embarrassed to talk about your symptoms. You have been living in discomfort for too long. Vaginal dryness can have a major impact on your well-being, making you feel miserable. It is time to do something about your discomfort.

Make an appointment at FAC to discuss ThermiVa with our team. Find out more about how effective this treatment option is. Not only will it benefit you, but it will make your intimate moments more enjoyable with your partner. You owe it to yourself to learn more about the ThermiVa difference.
